In response to nation-wide strike call by the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) to protest the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in  Kolkata, resident doctors of various government hospitals in Jharkhand went on strike (except for emergency duty) on Tuesday.  Senior medical teachers, lecturers and bonded candidates in these medical colleges are managing the hospitals.  The medicos have gone on strike in order to express solidarity with the residents of RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata. Junior doctors of Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi went on indefinite strike on Monday.  The demands of agitating doctors include CBI probe into the case and safety of doctors at workplace. The decision to call for strike was taken in the morning after an emergency meeting. Dr Bharti Kashyap, Chairperson of Women Doctors Wing IMA, demanded immediate investigation of this case by CBI. She said that National Medical Commission has not made any guideline for safety of doctors. There are strong safety guidelines at airports. Such guidelines should be made for big hospitals where many resident doctors work even at night. There should be proper arrangement of CCTV cameras, guards and street lights. Apart from junior doctors at RIMS, senior residents and junior residents of the other five medical colleges, including MGMMCH Jamshedpur, SNMMCH Dhanbad, SBMCH Hazaribagh, MMCH  Palamu and PJMCH Dumka took out candle march in the evening today and after that they decided on to join an indefinite boycott from tomorrow. As pre-announced programme, senior residents, junior residents and PG students reached the hospital under banner of the IMA Junior Doctors Network (JDN) and Junior Doctors Association (JDA) and began an indefinite boycott of their duty from 8.45 am. JDN president Dr Vikash Kumar, vice-presidents Dr Jaideep Kumar and Dr Ranvijay, JDN president Dr Ankit Kumar, vice-president Dr Abhishek Hansda who were leading the agitation at RIMS said emergency services have been exempted from indefinite boycott and only OPDs and routine OT have been boycotted. The indefinite boycott will continue till all demands of the Kolkata Junior Doctors Association are accepted, said JDN and JDA leaders. The main demands of Kolkata doctors are a CBI probe into murder, speedy trial, security arrangement and compensation to the victims family. In the meantime, having seen the massive impact of the boycott on health services, RIMS authorities called both the associations leaders to talk to solve the issues. A meeting of senior residents and junior doctors was also held at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College Hospital (MGMMCH) Jamshedpur today over joining the indefinite boycott. JDN state secretary Dr Raghvendra Kumar said that as per the decision senior residents and junior doctors of all five medical colleges will take out a candle march at 6.30 pm.
